Home ‹ The Park
There is a place in northern California where the granite of the Sierra Nevada, the lava of the Cascades, and the sagebrush of the Great Basin and Modoc Plateau meet, a fascinating crossroads of geology and biology.
Lassen Volcanic National Park, encompassing 106,000 acres is this very special place. This active volcano park is also home to more than 700 plants and 250 wildlife species and preserves important Native American archaeological sites and historic structures.
Designated America’s thirteenth national park in 1916 after Lassen Peak exploded in 1915, the Park now is visited by nearly 400,000 people a year.
Lassen National Forest is a total of 1.2 million acres or 1,875 square miles. It lies within seven counties; Lassen, Shasta, Tehama, Butte, Plumas, Siskiyou, and Modoc.
